The quintuple framework

First day of the seminar. It presents the TAME-quintuple framework and its five components —states, operators, constraints, goal and temporal horizon— and the difference between a collective and an aggregate of parts.

The five components of a multiscale control system

A system can keep all of its parts intact and still stop solving the problem it exists for. The session introduces the TAME-quintuple framework, which describes any regulated system —a cell, an organ or a person— through five components, and locates the failure in the available information rather than in the machinery.

A paradigm shift in approaching complex problems: preserved machinery and degraded information as a failure profile

States and operators: reachable configurations and the actions available to move between them

Distinguishing state from goal: assignment criteria and frequent errors in identifying them

Applying the formalism across scales: the same failure profile at the cellular, organ and behavioural levels

Regulation as a state-dependent constraint

An effector can respond to a signal in one state and not respond to the same signal in another, without any damage involved. The session examines permissive signals —those that produce no effect of their own but enable the effect of others— and their diagnostic implications.

Functional versus rigidified constraint: criteria for telling them apart, and reversibility

Operator cost and constraint: what a reduced response reveals compared with an absent one

Conjunction of permissions: effectors that require two concurrent enabling signals

Differential diagnosis between an inactive permission and a damaged effector, and why the therapeutic approach is reversed

What the system pursues and how far ahead it anticipates

A system cannot be asked what it pursues, but it can be observed: the value it actively returns to after being displaced is its goal. The session covers how that goal is identified and how the horizon with which the system anticipates is estimated.

What distinguishes a collective from an aggregate

A set of parts can behave as a single agent or as a simple sum, and the difference is measurable. The session distinguishes agency from efficiency, examines what makes a collective perform better than the sum of its parts, and what can be observed when that gain is lost.

Agency: attribution criteria, independent of the substrate

Efficiency: competence measured as gain over an uninformed search

Superadditivity: what distinguishes a collective from an aggregate of parts

Mechanisms that generate superadditivity

Loss of superadditivity: dissolution of the collective as a single agent
